Be the Street Champion: Alankrita Dayal

Name:
Alankrita Dayal

City: Fremont

Neighborhood: Bruce Drive

What do you like best about your neighborhood?

The people in my neighborhood are very caring towards the environment. The plants are always watered. The trash is placed in the correct bins. They have truly been my motivation.

What do you do to keep your streets clean?

I often help my neighbors rake their leaves. In general, whenever I see a plastic bag or a water bottle on the ground, I make sure to recycle it! Trash and compost are always placed in the correct bins as well.

What does Be the Street mean to you?

Be the Street means a lot to me. It is a first step green initiative—something all high schoolers should be a part of. Be the Street’s voice is very strong and inspirational. Its motive is identical to mine; I wish to create a cleaner, safer, greener environment for us and the coming generations.

How has Be the Street encouraged you to take action?

I have been able to advertise and promote the importance of cleaning up our environment. The products we use and dispose of can be very harmful to living things. I feel that it is my responsibility—and in fact, everyone’s responsibility—to take the initiative and bring this positive change in our communities. Just imaging a clean world motivates me to continue striving for this goal! In my community, I have involved myself with clean-up crews and hosted park clean-up days for this mission.

Be the Street Champion: Bonnie Xu

Here at Be the Street, we are all about keeping the Bay area streets clean and safe. So, we want to highlight Bay area locals ages 14-24 who are creating a positive environmental impact in the community. Here’s an interview with one of our first Be the Street members below.

Name: Bonnie Xu

City: San Leandro

What Bonnie likes best about her neighborhood:

The best thing about my neighborhood is that there are many places that you can go to on foot, like the park, the library, and the swimming pool. There is also a wide variety of small restaurants and shops.  You see litter in the streets sometimes, but when you go near recreation centers or parks they are usually pretty clean. I would like to see more recycling bins in my neighborhood.

What Bonnie does to keep her streets clean:

Whenever I come across litter in my neighborhood, I pick it up and dispose of it correctly. I also advise kids to properly dispose of litter at a Boys and Girls Club summer camp that I volunteer at. Hopefully, by reminding these kids of the importance of keeping our planet clean, the next generation will be more willing to take better care of the environment.

What does Be the Street means to Bonnie:

To me, it means that you should put yourself in the street’s perspective. If I was a street, I’d like to be kept clean and litter free.

How Be the Street encouraged Bonnie to take action:

Being a part of Be the Street has taught me that even smallest actions make a difference, whether it’s taking a couple of minutes to reply to a Be the Street related email or taking a few seconds to pick up one piece of litter. I make it my daily goal to pick up at least five pieces of litter every day. If just one piece of litter is disposed of correctly, it makes a huge difference to our environment because all my hard work will eventually add up over time.

Are you taking steps to keep the Bay area clean or do you know someone else who is? Nominate yourself or a friend by emailing us at info@bethestreet.org, and check back at www.bethestreet.org to see who else is doing some great things to keep our community clean.*

*Be the Street Champions must reside in the Bay area and be 14-24 years old.

High Seas Become a Virtual Country

Did you know that the high seas – oceans that lie beyond national boundaries – constitute 45% of the Earth’s surface? Because they are beyond any nation’s jurisdiction, the high seas belong to no one which means nobody is really taking the responsibility to protect this ecosystem.

Until now.

A coalition of NGOs, scientists and activists has taken up a task to protect the high seas by calling the international seas TerraMar and offering a “citizenship” to this imaginary nation. Their first goal is to reach 1 million active citizens that are passionate about spreading awareness regarding our world’s largest ecosystem.

By joining the movement and applying for a passport, you can also become an ambassador of a marine species of your choice. Visit http://theterramarproject.org to learn more about the project, become a citizen and help protect the health of the oceans!

Thanks From The Street

Be the Street wants to give a well-deserved shout-out to the Youth Resource Council. We owe a lot of what Be the Street is today to their participation and dedication over the last few months—not the least of which, our name! It’s been great for us to see the Youth Resource Council really take an active interest in making Be the Street what it is today! After all, that’s the idea behind Be the Street: it’s about our community making the best Bay Area imaginable!

From responding to discussions, giving opinions on everything from logos to website designs to events, the Youth Resource Council has, and will continue to be, a valuable part of our Be the Street team. We would like to thank you, Youth Resource Council and acknowledge you all because we couldn’t have done it without you!

For now, we’ve got one more thing we’d like to ask our fellow Youth Resource Council members to be: keep being awesome! If you would like to be a part of the Youth Resource Council and join in with other people working to create the best Bay that they can, apply to become a member here. We look forward to having you a part of the group! The Youth Resource Council is a great group of young adults who are smart, honest, funny, insightful, energetic, optimistic, and we are looking forward to their continued input and help in shaping Be the Street in the future.
